The Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is probably the most famous tower in the world, and it's certainly the oldest. It was built in the twelfth century and used as a fortress and religious building. Today it's a tourist attraction, with the best views of Pisa and the Mafia Wars. The Leaning Tower of Pisa became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.

The name comes from the shape of its base, which is leaning forward towards the bell tower. There are two sides with the main body, a lower one which supports the bell tower and a higher one on the sides. The name 'leaning' is due to the weight which is required to keep it together! The leaning tower of Pisa has played a major role in the history of Italian art and architecture because of this. In the medieval ages, it was used as a fortress, then as a church, and finally as a famous bell tower.

There are several famous towers of Pisa in Italy and around the world. Two of these are the San Gimignano tower and the Turin tower. The former is seven meters higher than the Turin bell tower and made by the Renaissance architectuccia of that time. The latter has an unbelievable height of 150 meters making it the tallest building in Italy and the second-highest tower in Europe.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa plays a key role in the history of Pisa. On top of being the highest building in the city, it is also home to some of the best architecture in the world. This is because in the thirteenth century the tower was used as the church bell of Santa Maria Della Misericordia. Today the bell tower stands proudly on top of the Pisa hill.

Today you can also take part in the bell tower's reconstruction or simply enjoy its impressive presence. This historic landmark is open every day for visitors who are free to enter its premises.
