One of the most common questions I hear people asking when they first get a promotion at work is; "would you ever say yes to everything?" The reality is that saying "yes" to everything we are given is not the best way to handle life. Sure, it is nice to feel like everything you do is going to be rewarded or recognized. However, this isn't how life works and there are some things we have to say "no" to.
If you are in sales or any job where you are told to go and do this and do that, you need to ask yourself why. Why would someone say yes to everything? It just doesn't make sense. To have any type of success in life you need to be able to say "no," at times, and you need to be able to do so without compromising your integrity or the success of the task.
Saying "no" is part of growing up. In fact, when you grow up you need to be able to say "no" to many things. When you were a kid you could say "no," to your parents, teachers, and other adults in your life. As you get older you have to learn to say "no" to those same adults. While many people would rather continue to do what they are doing if there is a better alternative they would choose to do it instead.
Say "no" to unnecessary meetings, phone calls, and other events. Do you really need to be hanging out with that person all the time? Do you really need to be answering their emails when you know it will take your attention away from more important things in your life? If you need to be contacted, then say "no." Sometimes it's better to not respond at all.
What if someone asked you to do something that you thought you would enjoy? Would you say yes? Would you have to give them all your details so they can plan a vacation around yours? Would you really enjoy the task? The answer to these questions will determine if you would choose to say "yes" or "no."
One of the most difficult things in life is to say no. When you feel like you don't really need something you might feel like saying yes is a waste of time. However, if you truly have no desire to do something then you need to refrain from saying it. Whether you realize it or not, saying no to yourself will usually work in your favor. You will be much happier with your life if you choose to say no to things that are no longer fulfilling to you.
